In Depth Analysis with Recount

You’ve probably heard of Recount.  At first glance, it appears as just a damage meter mod.  And if that’s all you’re looking for from it then you’re golden!  However, for those looking to do more than just measure their epeen, Recount provides an in depth look into the events and statistics of each battle.  It’s a tool to help you and your raid improve yourselves by displaying everything from how many times your spells missed to a real-time graph of your entire raid’s DPS.

Basic Display

This is the simplest form of Recount, and it’s what you’ll get if you simply install the addon and let it do it’s thing.  It displays every raid/party member in a list, sorted by the amount of damage they’ve done overall.

But what are those little numbers?  Well, the first number beside my name is the amount of damage I’ve done.  In brackets, it includes my average damage per second and the percentage of damage I’ve done out of the group as a whole.

Be sure to note that if you click the little yellow paper icon, you can choose the time frame to display, whether it’s the current/latest fight, the boss you fought a few kills back or the overall data from the beginning of recording.

Data Types

Recount isn’t just for seeing the damage you’ve dealt.  It has a whole host of other measurables that you can review, which can be found by flipping through using the tiny arrows on the top bar, or by right clicking the bar and choosing from a list.  A few of the more useful ones are Healing Done, Friendly Fire (to catch people when working on [Shocking!]), Deaths and Dispells.

Detailed Damage Overview

When you click on a player’s name, it will bring you to a detailed pie chart view of how the player’s damage (or healing) was distributed.  Furthermore, by clicking on each individual ability you can see in the bottom half of the display how many hits and crits there were, and how much they hit for.

By clicking the magnifying glass in the corner of the display, you’ll get to another damage breakdown.  This one will summarize the types of damage you’ve done.

Death Detail Overview

When you have Deaths as your current measurement, clicking on player names will show a completely different detail view.  It lists who each death was caused by and shows a recap of the last few hits and heals the player received.  This is a great way to see how many times someone has died to a Twilight Fissure on a Sartharion fight, or to see if a tank received proper heals before they died.

Real-time DPS Display

Now this is just fun to play with.  But what is it useful for?  Well, if you’ve ever wondered how much your DPS increases when you blow all of your cooldowns, or when you get a certain proc, this is the best visual indicator.

Recount Configuration

All of these features are available right out of the box with Recount.  However, the functionality and look can both be modified using the configuration. Here are a couple of options of note:

  • Merge pets w/owners: Make sure your Hunters are showing their full potential – include their pets DPS with their personal DPS for more accurate results.
  • Hide in combat: This is great to help you focus on the raid and not the damage meters while you fight.  I use this option in coordination with the “Show Only in Combat” option of Omen so they both share the same screen real estate.

I find the Death Detail overview to be the most useful during a raid. It gets the discussion started, and makes sure you’re dealing with real data. You can have an OT swear up and down that they didn’t pull aggro, but if you see that they’re starting to take melee before the MT is dead, you know something is wrong, and can make the necessary adjustments.

Nice overview B. I’ve been a long-term Recount user and from an officer, class leader, heal leader and raider perspective it has been invaluable.

However, lately I’ve found that it tends to hog a huge amount of memory as raid progress and data is collected. This initially lead me to deleting data periodically and ultimately switching Recount off entirely.

Any tips from users out there on how to maintain the functionality of Recount without it sucking so many resources?

@Tunza it won’t solve your memory problems entirely, but one alternative to Recount you may want to look into is called Skada Damage Meter. It’s modular and more lightweight versus Recount even with everything turned on. I don’t have an empirical data to hand, but I would estimate that it uses less than half the RAM after i.e. a full Naxx-25 clear. Expect a bit more info from us in a future post.

Thanks Ithato – looking forward to seeing how the website develops.

I’ve seen a fair few UI’s with Skada – I’ll give it a shot. I’m actually enjoying not having a meter visible at the moment (farm content) and just focusing on shot priorities, survivability and watching the encounters unfold. The only thing I miss is the analytical aspect after each encounter. Might try to work Skada in as a “not visible during combat” mod.

Its a shame you fail at shot priorities and survivability then Tunza, watching the encounter unfold (while waiting for res) is clearly your area of expertise.

    hahaha

Awesome site. I love the idea of merging the screen “real estate” taken by Recount and Omen, brilliant! I’ll be going home and doing that tonite.

Recount is really insanely memory hungry. I have it running nearly all the time, since some weeks simultaneously with skada. The guys behind skada do a fantastic job, the more feedback they’ll get the closer skada comes to a real recount alternative.

The most important thing for recount analysis: It’s just numbers. Numbers are always open to interpretation. Never let yourself fool be absolute values and big numbers. If you really want to improve your performance, learn working with WWS/wowmeter
