Everyone knows about the basic addons you need to start building a UI: Action bars, unit frames, cast bar, minimap, textures/panels, etc. But what about the kinds of addons no one really needs but are extremely useful anyway and can make your game-life (even if it’s just a tad) easier? These are the kinds of addons that assist you in small ways.
- FriendShare: Syncs your friend and ignore list between characters. Extremely useful if you’re an altaholic, you no longer have to remember who that guy was who tanked that instance on that character that you made friends with and now want to add him to your friend’s list on another character than the one you met him on. Also handy if the friend-in-mind has funky (albeit illegal!) characters in his/her name, so you don’t have to remember any crazy alt codes to type it in.
- CloseUp: Zoom in on that awesome looking sword, try on your target’s gear with one click, get rid of the annoying background in the dressing room! CloseUp does all this, and it even works in all frames where there’s a 3D portrait (except unitframes) such as the character frame, pet frame, and even the inspect window!
- FarmIt: Handy for anyone who has farmed anything in their entire life (and we know this is all of us!), especially handy for those with a gathering profession. FarmIt is a little frame that you can move around that displays how much of an item you currently have, all stacks included, without you having to go into your bags and count (and perhaps miss a stack?). It also lets you know, every time you pick up an item, how many of it you have total in your bags. So if I pick up x5 Frostweave and I already have x25 in my bag, FarmIt will let me know that I now have 30 Frostweave.
- GridAutoFrameSize: For you users of Grid, this is something I consider a must-have that, surprisingly, not many know about! It sizes your grid based on the size of your current party or raid without you having to go into your Grid configuration menu and changing it yourself. Yes, less work for you!
- RecipeKnown: Ever go to the auction house to peruse available patterns/formulas/schematics for your, and your alt’s, professions and buy a bunch you think are neat only to discover said you’ve already learned them? Yeah, I’ve done that, too. So that’s why when I discovered this addon, I leaped for joy! RecipeKnown will color a recipe green if you’ve already learned it, even if an ALT has learned it! No more wasted money!
- SendSelf: Ever go to the mailbox to send an alt an item or some gold and accidentally send it to someone else because a friend or guildie has a similar name and the auto-complete feature filled in their name instead of yours? Is your friends list maxed out because you had to add your numerous alts to the list just so your lazy self wouldn’t have to type their name at the mailbox every time? Well then, this addon is for you. SendSelf adds all your alts names to the auto-complete list at the mailbox without them being on your friends list, and it prioritizes your alt’s names over names of friends and guildies. Problem solved!

Sweet, some great addons, I’ll be downloading all but Farmit and the grid one, not sure if this would fall into the catagory of ‘might not know about’ but I couldn’t live without Onebag…now just need to get out of work and get them installed ^^
Friends With Benefits also does a nice job synching friends lists.
Grimtorn’s last blog post..Failtanks are FAIL
For friends between alts I prefer FriendsWithBenefits, http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info6931-FriendsWithBenefits.html
xabbott’s last blog post..xabbott: I couldn’t resist the Ubisoft classic pack. Beyond Good & Evil, so good. Took some work to get it running in Vista64 though.
@xabbott
I too am a fan of most if not all of Tekkub’s work. I’ll be covering “alternative” addons versus their commonplace counterparts soon.
Great lists! I’m going to try a few out tonight when I get on.
I found out this weekend that the newest version of Carbonite now includes a “Pal” list much like its previous “Punk” list. This Pal list will sync up all of your friends across any character you’ve logged on with while carbonite was active.

Wow – years of hoarding mods and there are still some that sneak past me.
I’m already in love with Farmit and I haven’t even downloaded it yet.
Recipeknown looks like a nice alternative to Akisrecipelist – hopefully with a lower memory footprint.
@Tunza ARL’s large memory footprint is hard to avoid given its functionality. What it does is give you as complete a listing as possible of every recipe in the game complete with details on all the ways of obtaining each. That’s a lot of information to store. RecipeKnown works somewhat in reverse; it records recipes your characters currently know, and then highlights those while you’re shopping. It doesn’t have any “prior knowledge”, so to speak, about existing recipes. If you could somehow amass enough characters to have mastered every recipe for every profession, I imagine the memory usage of RecipeKnown would rival if not exceed that of ARL.
Thanks again Ithato.

The reason I use FriendShare over Friends with Benefits is because with FriendShare I have the option to turn off the automatic addition of Alts to my friends list, and with Friends with Benefits there is no way to do that with editing the LUA. As an RPer, I have a very full list without my alts being on it, and I use SendSelf to add the full name of my alts to the auto-complete list at the mailbox with the added benefit of prioritizing my alts over my friends and guildmates.
One thing to note about GridAutoFrameSize – while this works (I use it) it seems to have a bug where it wont show pets. After a raid has filled up, I have to manually go into the Grid settings, uncheck and then recheck, the setting for Show Pets. For some reason it overrides this setting every time.
Not a huge deal, but when your wife is a hunter it can make for bad mojo!
I’d like to nominate Fishing Buddy :) Its not needed but sure does make fishing better.

I’d also like to add that some might find EasyMail better than Sendself. I used to be a fan of SendSelf but it gotten kinda broken and bugged at one stage and I switched to EasyMail and its much, well easier!
For all my mail needs its gotta be Postal.
This addon has a great ‘Open All’ button on the mail window for getting all those AH posts into your bag in mere seconds. You can also set filters on the button if you don’t want to open everything. Plus is makes mailing things really easy with a dropdown menu u can add names to or just pull them off your friends/guild lists. (tip: there’s a setting to speed up the ‘Open All’ function in the preferences)
