MMOUI Minion Released (Beta)

WoW Interface has released a beta version of its own addon auto-updater.

Note: It’s in BETA. Backup your Addons folder!

I have to say that this is what an updater should look like. It reminds me a little bit of the old ace updater. I tossed a couple of screenshots further below in the post so you can get an eye for what the updater itself looks like.

It only locks on to the WoW Interface servers with room for more download options in the future (at least, if I read this right). As I was browsing through the list of addons I already had to update, several of them were not available for download. The Java installer went through with no hitches and my WoW directory was detected easily.

Here’s a screenshot of the actual program in action. You can update addons manually one at a time or you can hit the Update All button and go grab yourself some coffee before calling it a day.

Addon name is on the left. The status of said addon goes down the middle. If you’re wondering what the 3 yellow-green icons are next to the update buttons, those are simply donation links so that you can support your favourite addon authors.

mmoui-unavailable

Here’s another screenshot of it actually doing something. You can see a progress bar as I’m manually updating Omen (even though as a healer I have it broadcasting but not displaying). You can see Palatinus is not available. Either the addon is no longer there or it’s under a different name or it just can’t be found. The two Pitbull additions at the bottom are waiting for the Pitbull core itself to be updated before a check is performed to see if the additions are up to date.

In any case, the beta looks promising. I haven’t found anything out of the ordinary just yet. There is one piece of advertising on the bottom right but that’s to be expected (and accepted). News updates are also featured right below.

Go download the beta

Looks good – I’ll be checking this out.

You realize that all threat meters are simply displays for the built in blizzard threat api and do no syncing or broadcasting anymore?

@Cal: Absolutely. I am totally up to date with everything addon and UI related ;).

Haha, actually no I had no idea. It’s slipped my mind. This means I can toast it then, eh?

*Big bold notice* The minionion is BETA! Make sure you back up your addon folder before you proceed. There is a chance it could install old addons or just overwrite your entire folder with porn. While that’s unlikely, be sure you back up just in case.

That being said, things are looking rather kickass so far. You did, however, forget to link the bug tracker and forums :P

Oh, and Matty… Omen hasn’t broadcast since 3.0 dropped, it’s driven entirely by the game’s API now. It’s just a pretty interface, if you’re not using the interface, you don’t need the addon.

Yea, if you never need to look at it there is no reason to run it. Blizzard added threat to the base UI and all threat mods since then just hook that and are simply displays.

Minion looks promising, but I think its success will depend on other sites actually writing modules to support it to make it universally accepted. I’m waiting to see if Curse puts out a module. My understanding is that it can support sites with premium features, though I don’t know the extent of that support. A WoWI / Curse all-in-one updater would make me one happy user.

Does not seem to play well with Symlinks on OS X (ended up deleting the one addon i decided to test with instead of installin/reinstallint/updating.

Yay! Finally, I’ve been waiting for the Beta to drop since curse stripped out their free users client. Hopefully this will do the trick, and as Cal said, it will be interesting to see what other addon hosting sites jump on the band wagon.

Has the potential to be the catch-all addon updater.

Well, in Beta it seems like it’s doing everything that Curse isn’t doing. However, I’ve learned that just because a Beta looks great doesn’t mean that the actual client is going to be the same.. Hellgate London (makes me sad to think of what that game could have been) has taught me that lesson well.

I gave the Beta a try and boy am I glad I obeyed the “backup your addons” this time…usually I skip that step often when trying out new things.

    Its slick
    its functional
its beta….meaning it overwrote a lot of mods i used and downloaded some I didn’t ask for. (i assume this was just a crossed wire with identifying what mods i was running). I reloaded my backups and think I’ll wait a bit longer for it to go main stream. lots of potential here though…looking forward to its final non beta release.
