Addon Highlight: Postal

I’ve never had to use a mail addon before. This was mostly due to the fact that I didn’t use the auction house very much. No one likes to send me anything either sadly. I mean really, who uses mail anymore? We have things like Ventrilo, guild chat and so forth that there’s just no point in using mail. Koriel was one of many players who recommended the Postal addon.

But I digress!

After leveling my Paladin to 80, I immediately set my sights towards becoming an auction housing machine. I realized early on that manually clicking and retrieving things out of the mail box was going to be the biggest hassle. I fired out a tweet looking for mail addons desperately hoping that somewhere out there someone could help me.

For the fresh auction house junkie, it even displays the total amount you’ve received from the different attachments in one session. It has the ability to open every attachments or just some attachments (done via check boxes).

I’ll panic every once in a while when sending mail to alts especially when they contain large sums of money. I’ll second guess who I send hundreds of Cobalt or Saronite bars too. Postal’s got that covered as it will auto complete names of your alts, players that you’ve recently sent mail to in addition to autocompleting names on your friends or guild list.

The trade block option is nice. I don’t get very many people opening trade with me when I’m at the mailbox. That seems to happen a lot primarily in front of banks.

I’m also digging the short cuts. I haven’t gotten into the hang of using them yet, so I’ll need to start making a habit of using the Shift-Click (takes items or money from mail).

Perhaps the satisfying thing is an auto-complete form on the subject line when simply sending out currency. Now I don’t have to irritably type asdf in the subject area.

Auto-complete of guildies and friends, as well as shift-click are part of the default UI. If you add your alts as friends (or use FriendsWithBenefits to do it for you) you don’t need Postal for that. Auto-subject on currency-only is nice, maybe I’ll rip that out into it’s own addon. Open some attachments via checks is actually more clicks than just shift-clicking the ones you want to open. And for auction mail, if you want to track sellthrough then you need to use something that opens mail slower due to the wonderful lag that the mailbox has always suffered. NutCounter (my sellthrough tracker) has AH mail opening built into it due to this.

Don’t forget BetterInbox, frankly I like it’s inbox redesign more than Postal’s.

@Tekkub: Its the alts which are a killer. I once mailed something off to some guy that had a similar name. Thankfully it was an abandoned toon and I got my Arcanite bars back from the auto-return. This was when Arcanite bars were something.

Yesss, love Postal!! :D After Wrath hit, is when they added the “Alt” and Guild options the way they look now – and it is AWESOME! Definitely one of my fave parts too. Before that they still had the ability to “save” whatever names you wanted at the top of the list. But over time it just gets more sleeker and cleaner. One of my Must-Haves for all my characters.

One thing that got me into trouble with Postal was the option to retain the name of the last person mailed: Too often, I’ve seen a name there, assumed it was autocompleted, and blissfully sent mail off to someone other than the intended recipient.

Purely my fault, but I’ve done it often enough that I disabled that option. Otherwise, I’m a very satisfied Postal user and I make it a point to recommend it to friends.

I’d be using CT-Mail forever – so finding Postal (on here, in one of the other posts or discussions) was wonderful. It’s especially useful for a bank alt.

Funny, I just started using this two weeks ago while leveling switching my second profession to enchanting. Really like it, especially the possibility to configure it to open only the action house mails with the open all button.
