Forget Gearscore, Try Namescore!

Saw this first on Healing Way and I just had to spread the word about it. So we got gearscore which assigns a score to players based on the level of their gear.

Enter Namescore which assigns ratings of players based on the quality of their name.

How is the grade assigned?

  • Legibility/Readability
  • Appropriateness
  • Aesthetics

Then again, one doesn’t need an addon to tell them that Lolpwned might not be a great player to raid with. Or the hunter named Xlegolasx. But it doesn’t stop there. You know those players with the funky characters in their name like Môrris? Those guys won’t get a good grade either.

**You know those players with the funky characters in their name like Môrris? Those guys won’t get a good grade either.**

    FAIL.

Not all of us are from the US or England.

In Germany using ü or ö is perfectly normal. (Schön, Führer…)
In Spanish the ´ in some bowels can drastically change the meaning of a word. (Papa != Papá)
Special characters can also be used to distinguish your alts (Ex: Main “Thaurus”, Alts: “Thäurus, Tháurus, etc..”)
And I could go on but I think you get the point.

    Aside from that, excellent addon.

There’s a DK in my realm called “Loldk”, I only saw him once in Dalaran, but his name was enough to add him to my ignore list.

I don’t get it, gear score is made to save you time and potentially help you gauge the gear of a class you don’t know so well. The only benefit I can see from Namescore is if their name is an obscure character reference that you didn’t pick up, and in that case it probably isn’t that bad anyway.

Don’t get me wrong, I fully encourage judging people based on their name, I just think I can probably do it as fast and potentially more accurately then a mod.

@Sid: The reason they wouldn’t get a good grade isn’t because the name is bad. It’s because of the extra effort required to look up the key combination to enter certain characters (whose names aren’t as common in the US or England). I suspect this addon was developed with North American users in mind. Obviously the Europeans where it is normal to have uncommon characters would be exempt.

I had hoped it’d go without saying to not take this addon as a literal way to evaluate someone as I meant it as a gentle jab towards the earlier gearscore post that I wrote up. I’m sure no one needs an addon to critically think about anything. I guess I’ll need to be more blatant with the wry sense of humor.

    @Matticus

    I get the point.

Anyway, as somebody said above, I can judge names faster than a mod.

    Specially LOLDK.

Why special characters are bad. They’re not being used as part of legitimate names… they’re being used to create cruft like this:

    ßlaze

Witty, no? Plus, at one point (if not still), it’s against the TOS to have non-ascii characters in your name.

  9. Shane Harris on Saturday, October 24, 2009

special characters are good. more people should use them.

  10. Lanacan on Saturday, October 24, 2009

@Falcolas it is only against TOS on US Servers. Non-Ascii characters are allowed in all other regions though. The thing its unless you report the person Blizz with a serious offense report does nothing about their name.

There use to be an addon that let you report those people with non-TOS friendly names that showed up in chat but I think just before or after BC release the API changed and the addon stopped working. The author dropped support because of all the harassment he got for making it from the leet wannabe Tolkien/Anime/Comic Book name ripoff freaks.

I’ve a big fan of InspectEquip.

    http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info9509-InspectEquip.html

Breaks down gear from various raids and dungeons so you can decide the players merit instead of some stupid number which has no relation to player skill at all.

  13. edgar on Saturday, October 24, 2009

@Lanacan, unfortunately, higher ASCII characters began to be allowed roughly two years ago.

  14. AltTabber on Saturday, October 24, 2009

Aren’t the various clients different by region? If so, seems like a simple regexp at character creation could catch these names.

And I agree with names like ßlaze. I always have to resist the urge to say, you know your name is pronounced “slaze”, right? And secondly, upper ASCII gives an unfair combat advantage in PvP (at least in US and especially if it’s the first char.)

I am cool with people using accents appropriately though. Bon jour, François!

@All complaining about special characters in names:

Since Latin American servers were open (and the accounts being part of the US wow) this restrictions could no longer be applied. In latin america the main language is spanish, but also portuguese, and french. The 3 languages use characters that are not part of the lower 128 ASCII codes (the ones TOS-compliant) Given the fact that there’s not a restriction forcing you to join LA servers if you live in Latin America, the restriction would forbid legit names in other languages.

This comes from someone who lives in Latin America, and plays in a US realm (Balnazzar/Garona)
