Tired of the same boring name plates? Maybe you’re just irritated with the way they seem to jump around or you’re wanting a new look.
Either way, check out Tidy Plates as an alternative!
Bonus: It has an array of different skins for use.

Threat Plates! It’s GREAT for DPS and Tanks. Changes the size and color of mobs’ nameplates depending on the threat level of the mob.
DPS Mode: plate grows as you reach too high threat.
Tank Mode: plate grows as you begin to lose threat.

Seconding Blixkreeg’s comment.
Shamtasticle’s “Threat Plates” theme for Tidy Plates is fantastic for aoe tanking. I use it on my paladin, both when tanking and DPS’ing. It toggles between DPS and Tank modes with a simple command.
If it’s in Tank mode, a mob that’s truly stuck on you is at 3/4 normal size, with green caps on it. If the mob is NOT attacking you, the nameplate is at 125% normal size, with big red spikes. Makes it easy to tell what mobs have to be taunted or smacked – and makes it easier to target them to.
In DPS mode, a mob that’s stuck to somebody else is 75% normal and has green caps – safe to attack! If you’re gaining threat, it jumps to normal size and yellow caps. If you make an oops and pull, it goes big, red, and spikey – a good sign you need to run to the nearest tank and hope they pull it back off of you :)
Looks good, installed it and will test drive in ToGC10 tomorrow. Got both Threatplates, and Cleanplates, but like the looks of clean better(more info), as well as I grabbed Virtualplates, which scales the nameplates based on the distance of the char from you/the camera.
Will post another comment after the test drive.

VirtualPlates only works in 3.3, I believe. There’s new tech in 3.3 that gives nameplates distance from the camera. Also, what do you mean by “more info” in CleanPlates over ThreatPlates? I’ve been turning off info I don’t like in the ThreatPlates. :)
You forgot about the plugin, Cleanplates, it’s really the best one of them all as most people are looking for the cleanest+most visible looking nameplates.
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL Codypaladin aka Codydruid is a horrible player, this will be his shinning moment in wow to be on a website.
What a remarkably useless comment.
My question is this: I am CONSTANTLY frustrated with the way nameplates seem to have a mind of their own and just go all over the place any time the mobs/camera so much as twitches. Does this addon reduce/eliminate that issue?
@Clockwork: I know what you mean. The default plates seem to jump around a lot when you’re moving or when other players are moving. These ones have some sort of intelligence and stay relatively in place when you’re moving. After a certain distance, the plates disappear altogether.
@ Clockwork
I think 3.3 will fix your issue. You can toggle between nameplates overlapping (no annoying jumping around) or the display version we have now on live.
If you just want pretty nameplates, I’d go with caelNameplates

Then open the .lua files and direct the addon to font/statusbar (default font is ugly and hard to read IMO) you’re using in your layout, et voila!

VirtualPlates works in the current build as of a week ago (late Nov)
@Matticus: Thank you muchly for your response. Wasn’t expecting one so quickly! I’m installing this now to see if it makes things a little easier for my poor Pally-tank. Thanks for the recommendation; Great blog, by the way. Well, both of them. :P
The default nameplates jump around alot because the code is trying to figure out how to show them all to you with no overlapping. Happily this behavior will become optional in 3.3. Here’s the complete list of nameplate updates from the PTR notes:
Unit Nameplates
* The range at which players can see unit nameplates has been increased by 40 yards.
* Unit nameplates are now subject to line-of-sight limitations in certain situations (this does not pertain to objects like Arena pillars or bridges).
* Players can now adjust select unit nameplate display settings listed below under Interface Options via the Names tab.
o Friendly/enemy pet nameplates can be toggled.
o Enemy totem nameplates can be toggled (friendly totem nameplates are never displayed).
o Players can choose whether or not unit nameplates overlap.
* Unit nameplates for critters are never displayed.
I love this addon. It is been super helpful for me on any of my tanking/dps/healing toons. I can’t get threatplates to work properly tho….at least I don’t notice the change in size of the nameplate. Anyone else having this problem?
Using ThreatPlates, TidyPlates and _VirtualPlates, ThreatPlates is working as expected. Are you running any other TidyPlate styles? Maybe they don’t play together.
I’m only using TidyPlates and ThreatPlates with no other skins. I am seeing color changes on the name plates altho no size changes that I can detect.
There was a bug in ThreatPlates’ first release after 3.3 came out, where threat sizing stopped working properly Make sure you’re using the most recent version available from http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info14984-TidyPlatesThreatPlates.html
I actually figured out that the threatplates wasn’t working properly when combined with another scheme so once I disable it and used just Tidyplates and Threatplates together it worked fine. It has made tanking so much easier now and other people I have recommended the same combo to have told me how great it is.
To clarify a few things:
Tidy Plates can only use one theme at a time (If you’ve installed both CleanPlates and ThreatPlates, Tidy Plates will choose whichever one it finds, first)
Tidy Plates doesn’t handle positioning of the plates (Only the Blizzard UI is allowed to Show/Hide/Move the plates), but it can fade a plate by adjusting the Alpha channel.
The default theme for Tidy Plates also has a Tank Mode, which many have overlooked. It doesn’t have the same in-game customizability that ThreatPlates does, but it works quite well, in my opinion. And, I like the way it looks. ;-) AND, it’s a bit lighter on the resources than ThreatPlates.
