How to Replace Most of Cartographer for Patch 3.3

This is a guest post by Acrimony.

The recent patch 3.3 broke arguably one of the most functional and widely-used world map addons, Cartographer; but according to Cartographer’s page at curse.com there are no plans to update the addon for patch 3.3 as it is based on an out-of-date framework that would require a complete rewrite. No single addon has stepped up to take the place of Cartographer as yet; but with a few addons, most of the major functionality can be replaced.

Base Map: Mapster

mapsteroptions

Nevcairiel’s WoWAce-based Mapster is a lightweight world-map only addon intended to be compatible with other map and navigation addons and it works well for replacing many of the major features of Cartographer, such as:

  • resizing and repositioning of the world map
  • displaying character and cursor coordinates
  • fog of war colouring and removal
  • the ability to steer and stop with the world map open
  • improved party and raid icons
  • support for individual character profiles

Patch 3.3′s new built-in quest tracking features such as quest objective marking and quest log integration within the world map window seem to work flawlessly with Mapster, and it doesn’t have any noticeable bugs or conflicts with other navigation addons like TomTom, but I encountered a small cosmetic problem using Esamynn’s Gatherer with Mapster in my setup. Gatherer’s "Show/Hide Items" button covered most of Mapter’s configuration menu button in the bottom left-hand corner of the world map window, but both buttons still work properly — Mapster’s is just a bit more difficult to click when Gatherer is enabled.

There are some features Mapster is lacking, notably old world and Outland instance maps. However, Northrend instance maps are available in Mapster, and so are battlegrounds.

Zone Info: Cromulent

Although Mapster lacks Cartographer’s zone info text for recommended level range, in-zone instances and required no-junk fishing skill this can easily be replaced by phyber’s addon Cromulent, which is actually Cartographer’s zone information broken out into its own separate addon.

Instance Maps: Atlas

atlas

Dan Gilbert’s Atlas has maps for all instances, battlegrounds, dungeon locations, and has maps showing all flight paths and zeppelin routes for all continents. Although it doesn’t integrate its maps into the main map window as Cartographer used to do, Atlas is one of the best instance map addons available; especially when paired with AtlasLoot, an addon that adds loot drop information for all instances.

Map Notes: MapNotes

mapnotes

Cortello has recently taken over updating of MapNotes, an add-on that allows players to set map notes in their world or instance map and share them with others in the group or raid. MapNotes currently conflicts with new quest tracking features in that notes will not pop-up on mouseover with "Show Quest Objectives" enabled in the world map.

Waypoints: TomTom

Cladhaire’s waypointing and navigation addon TomTom is still a standout among its kind, and got a serious usefulness boost from Blizzard’s new integrated quest tracking features. The integrated quest tracking of patch 3.3 coupled with TomTom isn’t as feature-rich or automated as QuestHelper, but for those looking for a lighter-memory setup the combination will certainly point you to where you should be elegantly enough. TomTom also integrates well with MapNotes’ functionality for those who wish to tweet to themselves across the face of Azeroth.

HandyNotes are the way better than MapNotes, GatherMate than Gatherer… but Atlas is too heavy and InstanceMaps isn’t working with 3.3′s Mapster. Any other addons for old Instances maps?

I too came in here to mention HandyNotes, especially when coupled with HandyNotes_Guild which uses the same protocol as Cartographer to show guildmembers’ locations on the map.

And yes, GatherMate knocks the socks off of Gatherer, largely thanks to the weekly updated GatherMate_Data that has a full dump from WoWHead of all node and herb spawns in the game.

Can’t believe you didn’t include Carbonite in your article. It integrates seamlessly with GatherMate as well as most quest-tracking add-ons.

The biggest thing I miss about Cartographer was the ability to drop the alpha of the background to zero. That made for a nice looking map of the zone only. Resized a little smaller and scooted off to one side and I could run around with it open, or pop it up on the run.

The new map functionality (smaller, movable, etc) and the new on map quest info has enabled me to get rid of Cartographer and Quest Helper. The latter was such a resource hog, that I am glad it is gone.

So, if I could find a mod to drop the background alpha and make the player icon bigger, my world map would be complete. Not a big deal, though. In all I am very happy with the new changes.

Soooo…….. can we include images in the add-on application? Are those considered attachments?

I have used Alphamap for probably 4 years (at least 3 years) and still love it. The one reason why I always found Alphamap superior to other maps addons is the ability to left click through the map with no problems. I bind my map to a mouse key and I am constantly bring up my map while navigating. I never could figure out how to do that with Cartographer. I don’t know if this is something you can do in Mapster. I find the Carbonite map to be absolutely annoying (after the first 5 minutes of “ahh cool it’s like Google maps” moment). In my opinion.

My one problem with Alphamap: I wish I could go back to when Alphamap was just a map, and next to nothing else. It now has a bunch of other utilities and options that I never look at (outside of resizing and alpha sliding). I always wonder if I am losing some memory for functions I’ll never use.

Alphamap integrates well with some other addons such as Quest Helper and Map Notes; though I have not extensively tested more than just with Quest Helper.

If you turn off the “Look and Feel” module of Cartographer, it works just fine.

      Carbonite > cartographer.

    8. Papitar on Tuesday, January 12, 2010

I have been using Carbonite for some time. I love how it show much better quest objectives, but I hate it wont show ie. if Wintergrasp is our side or other side. And it is really hard to configure. I don’t play in pvp server so do not need punks and alerts of if opposite faction member is near me.
So if some one have know how more configure Carbonite or link for good explanation how to configure I would love to see ways to use this addon.

I’ve tried Carbonite for a few monthes, and ultimately went back to Cartographer, right before patch 3.3 broke it…
That being said, I’m not coming back to Carbonite.
It sure does a lot of thing, but that was way too many for me, and the granularity of the parameters were not thin enough for my needs.

I’m gonna try Mapster and see how it goes.
I have the same concerns as Tebla about transparency of the map’s background.

Am i the only whos Cartographer works fien for 3.3?

    11. sayling on Tuesday, January 12, 2010

You /can/ set the alpha – check out the options… have a look at the screenshots that are likely available on the site you got Mapster from…

    13. Aloix on Tuesday, January 12, 2010

@ Testo – I’m still using it too and it works fine. If it starts to break, I’ll be referring to this post, though!

    14. Jake on Tuesday, January 12, 2010

Cartographer works fine if you go to your addon selection screen (login screen) and simply disable the Look and Feel section of Cartographer. Nearly everything else works perfectly. I’ve yet to find anything that hasn’t, and I use most of the popular features. Foglight, notes, etc.

    15. Brtt on Tuesday, January 12, 2010

      sayling, you /missed/ the point…
What Tebla and I are bitching about is changing the BACKGROUND alpha.
In Mapster, you can only change the alpha of the WHOLE FRAME.

I’ve been using Cartographer 3 without problems.

Cartographer 3 works like a top for me. Except for the missing map of Dalaran .. which has been an issue since its inception.

With Cartographer, you have to like the zoning in/out with the mousewheel… unless I missed some option to turn it off.

    20. mfe on Tuesday, January 12, 2010

Brtt, maybe before you give sayling crap, you should a) read his post, b) look at the screenshot he posted, or c) go try it yourself. It does as cartographer did and as you said you wanted…why this is difficult for you grasp simply escapes me.
